The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released an updated digital toolkit for mold assessment and remediation planning, featuring an AI-assisted risk calculator that helps property owners, insurance adjusters, and restoration contractors determine appropriate remediation scope based on contamination type, affected area, and building occupancy.
The toolkit, available at epa.gov/mold, incorporates the agency's updated guidance on mold health effects and remediation protocols. The AI calculator asks users a series of questions about the contamination and generates a recommended response level — from basic cleaning to full professional remediation — with citations to EPA and IICRC standards.
"We designed this tool to help property owners understand when they can address mold themselves and when they need professional help," said EPA Indoor Environments Division Director Dr. Patricia Koman. "It also helps contractors communicate remediation scope to clients and insurers."
The toolkit includes interactive guides for common scenarios including post-flood mold prevention, HVAC contamination, and crawlspace moisture management. All content is available in English and Spanish.
