New Military Housing Bill Puts IICRC Certifications and Mold Standard Front and Center

Legislation signed in late 2025 and taking effect in 2026 mandates that all mold remediation in covered military housing comply with the ANSI/IICRC S520, elevating the standard's role in federal contracting.

New military housing legislation that took effect in 2026 mandates that all mold remediation activities conducted in covered military housing comply with the ANSI/IICRC S520 Standard for Professional Mold Remediation, according to an IICRC press release.

The legislation places IICRC certifications and the S520 standard at the center of federal contracting requirements for mold remediation work in military housing, creating new opportunities for certified contractors and raising the bar for work quality.

The bill requires that mold assessments be performed both before and after remediation by independent third parties, consistent with the S520 standard's requirements for pre- and post-remediation verification testing.

For restoration contractors seeking to work on military housing contracts, the legislation creates a clear pathway: IICRC certification and compliance with the S520 standard are now prerequisites for federal work in this sector.

The IICRC has been working with federal agencies and congressional offices for years to advance the recognition of its standards in federal law and contracting requirements. The military housing legislation represents a significant milestone in that effort.
