President Trump signed an executive order Jan. 23, 2026, directing federal agencies to address what the White House described as state and local failures to expedite the rebuilding of Los Angeles communities destroyed by the catastrophic wildfires of January 2025.
The executive order, titled "Addressing State and Local Failures to Rebuild Los Angeles After Wildfire Disasters," directed federal agencies to identify and remove regulatory barriers to rebuilding and to expedite federal permitting and environmental review processes for rebuilding projects.
The order reflected growing frustration with the pace of rebuilding in the affected communities, where thousands of families remained displaced more than a year after the fires. Permitting delays, insurance disputes, and contractor shortages had all contributed to the slow pace of recovery.
For the restoration and rebuilding industry, the executive order signaled a federal commitment to accelerating the rebuilding process and potentially reducing some of the regulatory barriers that had slowed recovery. However, industry observers noted that the fundamental challenges of contractor capacity and materials availability would not be resolved by executive action alone.
The order directed the relevant federal agencies to report back to the president within 30 days on specific actions they were taking to expedite the rebuilding process.
